Welcome to butwal oldest and trusted education consultancy for abroad study

Australia is one of the top study destinations for Nepali students seeking internationally recognized degrees in a safe, multicultural, and student-friendly environment. With world-class universities, flexible post-study work options, and a clear pathway to permanent residency, Australia offers more than just a degree. At First Step Consultancy in Butwal, we have helped hundreds of students from Lumbini Province successfully apply to Australian universities, colleges, and TAFE institutes.

Why Study in Australia?

Globally recognized qualifications. Australian degrees are respected by employers and institutions worldwide. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) ensures every qualification meets a national standard, which adds credibility to your certificate, diploma, or degree.

Post-study work opportunities. After completing your degree, you can apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) which allows you to live and work in Australia for 2 to 4 years depending on your qualification and study location. This is one of the strongest post-study work schemes among all study destinations.

Pathway to permanent residency. Australia has a points-based skilled migration system. Studying certain in-demand courses such as nursing, engineering, accounting, and IT can directly strengthen your PR application after graduation.

Safe and welcoming country. Australia consistently ranks among the safest countries in the world. Nepali students will find large and active Nepali communities in cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Work while studying. Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and unlimited hours during official breaks. This helps offset living costs significantly.

Scholarship availability. Australia Awards Scholarships, university merit scholarships, and Destination Australia scholarships are available to Nepali students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Your Australian institution will issue a CoE once you have a confirmed and paid offer. You cannot lodge the visa without it.

2. Genuine Student Requirement (GSR)
From 2024, Australia replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the Genuine Student Requirement. You must demonstrate that your primary purpose in coming to Australia is to study. This is assessed through a personal statement and your overall application profile.

3. English Language Proficiency

Test Minimum Score
IELTS Academic 5.5 to 6.5 overall (varies by institution)
PTE Academic 42 to 58 (varies by institution)

  • Tuition fees for the first year

  • School costs for any dependents accompanying you

5. Academic Documents
Certified copies of SEE, +2, and bachelor’s degree (if applying for postgraduate) transcripts and certificates.

6. Health Insurance (OSHC)
Overseas Student Health Cover is mandatory for the full duration of your visa. Your institution will often arrange this for you, or you can purchase it independently.

Frequently Asked Questions: Studying in Australia from Nepal

What is the minimum IELTS score for an Australian student visa?
The Department of Home Affairs does not set a fixed minimum IELTS score for the visa itself, but your institution will require a score for admission. Most universities require 6.0 to 6.5 overall IELTS Academic. TAFE and diploma programs often accept 5.5. Your visa is assessed based on your CoE and overall application.

Can I work while studying in Australia?
Yes. Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time and unlimited hours during official semester breaks. Spouses accompanying you on a dependent visa may also have work rights depending on your course level.

What is the Subclass 485 visa?
The Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) allows you to stay and work in Australia after completing your degree. Duration ranges from 2 to 4 years depending on your qualification level and whether you studied in a regional area.

Does studying in regional Australia give any advantage?
Yes. Regional study gives you extra points in the skilled migration points test and may qualify you for a longer post-study work visa. Many students choose regional universities such as Charles Sturt University or Federation University specifically for this benefit.

What is OSHC and is it mandatory?
Overseas Student Health Cover is a health insurance policy required by the Australian government for all international students on a student visa. It covers basic medical and hospital costs during your stay. Your institution may include it in your offer or you can purchase it from approved providers.

How long does the Australian student visa take to process?
Processing times vary. As of 2025, most student visa applications from Nepal are processed within 4 to 8 weeks. It is advisable to apply at least 8 to 10 weeks before your course start date.

What intakes are available for Australian universities?
The main intakes are February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). Some institutions also offer a November intake for selected programs. TAFE institutes often have rolling intakes throughout the year.

Can I bring my family to Australia while studying?
Yes. Eligible student visa holders can bring a spouse or de facto partner and dependent children. Family members may have work and study rights depending on your course level. Dependent visa costs and OSHC for family members are additional expenses to plan for.
