A family visa, also called a dependent visa, allows the spouse and children of a student or worker to join them abroad. Rules are different for every country. Some countries allow dependents on almost every course level. Others only allow it for higher level programmes.
Important note box: UK rules changed in January 2025. Only students on a PhD or research based postgraduate course can now bring a spouse or children on a UK Student visa. If you are applying for a taught master’s or undergraduate course in the UK, you cannot bring dependents under this route. Every country has its own rules for who can bring family, what it costs, and whether your spouse can work. Here is what applies for Nepali applicants.
Only available if you are on a PhD or research based postgraduate course. Your spouse and children under 18 can apply as dependants. Each dependant needs their own visa fee and health surcharge payment, along with a TB test certificate from an approved clinic in Kathmandu.
Spouse and unmarried children under 21 of an F-1 student can apply for an F-2 visa. F-2 dependents can study part time but cannot work in the USA. This is a good option if your family wants to be with you during your studies without seeking employment.
Canada is known for family friendly study permit rules. Depending on your programme level, your spouse may be eligible for an open work permit, which lets them work full time for any employer in Canada. Rules have changed in recent years, so we confirm your exact eligibility during your consultation.
Australia allows spouse and children to join you on a Subclass 500 student visa. You will need extra funds, around AUD 10,394 per year for a partner and AUD 4,449 per year per child. If you are enrolled in a master’s degree or higher, your spouse gets full time work rights.
No. If your spouse or children are joining you as a dependant on a UK, Australia, Canada, or USA student visa, they do not need to take an English test. This requirement applies only to the main student applicant, not to the family members joining them.
This is different from other visa routes, like a UK spouse visa for someone joining a British citizen, which does require a basic English test. Since our clients are students bringing dependants, this rule does not apply to you. We confirm this clearly during your consultation so you do not spend time or money preparing for a test you do not need.
