Welcome to butwal oldest and trusted education consultancy for abroad study

Canada is one of the most welcoming and student-friendly study destinations in the world. With world-ranked universities, affordable tuition compared to the USA and UK, a straightforward post-study work permit, and one of the clearest pathways to permanent residency among all English-speaking countries, Canada has become a top choice for Nepali students. At First Step Consultancy in Butwal, we help students from Lumbini Province navigate every step of the Canadian study permit process, from university selection to visa approval.

Why Study in Canada?

High quality education at reasonable cost. Canadian universities consistently rank among the top institutions globally. Tuition fees are significantly lower than comparable institutions in the USA or UK, making Canada an excellent value for a world-recognized degree.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). After completing a program of at least 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), you can apply for a PGWP that allows you to work anywhere in Canada for up to 3 years. This is one of the most generous post-study work schemes available globally.

Clear pathway to permanent residency. Canada’s Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) are specifically designed to convert international graduates into permanent residents. Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP significantly boosts your Express Entry points score.

Bilingual and multicultural society. Canada is officially bilingual in English and French. It is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, with large Nepali communities in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton. Nepali students adapt quickly and feel at home.

Safe and stable country. Canada consistently ranks among the top countries globally for quality of life, safety, and political stability. It is an ideal environment for international students.

Work while studying. Study permit holders in Canada can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. This was increased from 20 hours in recent years and significantly helps students manage living costs.

Scholarships available. The Canadian government, provincial governments, and individual universities offer a range of merit and need-based scholarships for international students, including the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships for doctoral students.

Canadian Study Permit Requirements for Nepali Students

To study in Canada you need a Study Permit. Canada does not call it a student visa but the study permit serves the same function. Here is what you need:

1. Acceptance Letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
You must first receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian DLI. All recognized universities and most colleges in Canada are DLIs. Your offer letter must include your DLI number.

2. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
Since January 2024, most international students applying from outside Canada must include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) issued by the province where their institution is located. This was introduced to manage international student numbers. Your institution or province will guide you on obtaining this.

3. Proof of Financial Support
You must show you have enough money to cover:

  • First year tuition fees (as stated in your offer letter)
  • Living costs: CAD 20,635 per year (current requirement as of 2025) for one person
  • Return transportation costs

4. English Language Proficiency

Test Typical Requirement
IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall
PTE Academic 58 to 65
TOEFL iBT 80 to 95
Duolingo English Test 110 to 125

Requirements vary by institution and program. Some colleges accept lower scores with conditional admission.

5. Academic Documents
Certified copies of SEE, +2, and bachelor’s degree transcripts and certificates as applicable.

6. Statement of Purpose (SOP)
A personal statement explaining why you chose Canada, your specific institution, your course, and your plans after graduation. This is a critical document for study permit approval.

7. Valid Passport
Must be valid for the full duration of your study program plus intended stay.

8. Biometrics
Most Nepali applicants must provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Kathmandu after submitting the online application.

Study Permit Application Fee: CAD 150 (as of 2025).

Processing Time: Online applications typically take 4 to 12 weeks. Apply at least 3 to 4 months before your intake date.

Post-Study Work: Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The PGWP is the most important reason many Nepali students choose Canada over other destinations. It allows you to work for any Canadian employer, in any occupation, anywhere in Canada after graduation.

PGWP Duration:

Program Length PGWP Duration
8 months to less than 2 years Equal to program length
2 years or more 3 years
PhD (any length) 3 years

The PGWP can only be used once in a lifetime. You must apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks or official letter of completion.

From PGWP to Permanent Residency

Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP earns you Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points under Express Entry. Most graduates in skilled occupations become competitive for PR within 1 to 3 years of working in Canada. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) also target international graduates specifically, with streams in provinces like Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba.

Frequently Asked Questions: Studying in Canada from Nepal

What is the difference between a study permit and a student visa for Canada?
Canada does not issue a separate student visa for most countries including Nepal. Instead, you receive a study permit which serves as your authorization to study and stay in Canada. Along with the study permit, you also receive a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) stamped in your passport which allows you to enter Canada.

What is the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) and do I need one?
Yes. Since January 2024, most international students applying to Canadian colleges and universities from outside Canada must include a PAL issued by the province where their institution is located. This is a new requirement introduced to manage international student intake numbers. Your institution will guide you on how to obtain it, and First Step Consultancy will assist you through the process.

What is the PGWP and how long can I work in Canada after graduation?
The Post-Graduation Work Permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada after completing your degree or diploma. If your program was 2 years or longer, you receive a 3-year PGWP. It can only be used once in a lifetime and must be applied for within 180 days of program completion.

Can I work while studying in Canada?
Yes. Study permit holders can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks such as summer and winter holidays. No separate work permit is required.

Is Canada a good option for permanent residency after study?
Yes, Canada is one of the best countries in the world for international graduates seeking permanent residency. The Express Entry system awards significant CRS points for Canadian work experience and education. Provincial Nominee Programs also specifically target international graduates. Most Nepali students who complete a degree and work in Canada on a PGWP become eligible for PR within 2 to 3 years.

Which is better for Canada, university or college?
Both are valid options depending on your goals. Universities offer academic degrees with stronger research and career prestige in professional fields. Colleges offer shorter, more affordable, career-focused diplomas and postgraduate diplomas that are equally eligible for the PGWP. Many Nepali students with existing bachelor’s degrees choose a 1 to 2 year college postgraduate diploma as a fast and cost-effective path to Canadian work experience and PR.

What English score do I need for a Canadian study permit?
The study permit itself does not have a fixed English score requirement, but your institution will require a score for admission. Most universities require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 and most colleges accept 6.0 overall. Some colleges accept lower scores with conditional admission.

What are the main intakes for Canadian institutions?
The three main intakes are September (Fall, primary intake), January (Winter), and May (Spring, offered by many colleges). Most universities primarily offer September and January intakes. Applications for September intake typically open from October to February of the preceding year.

Canada offers world-class education, one of the most generous post-study work permits globally, and a proven pathway to permanent residency.
